Tall Tales

This is the first pair of pants I made, and really the first sewing achievement that I felt very good about. I wore the pants for several days after making them and they grew a size larger in the process. I decided to shrink them with warm washing and drying. The pants shrunk significantly – and were once again just right in the waist and butt. It didn’t occur to me that they would also shrink vertically. My brand new pants became ankle-length. Fortunately there was enough fabric in the hem for me to let them down an inch. If you have ever lengthened pants, you know what happens. There is a permanent line caused by the original crease that is lighter than the rest of the fabric. I think short people could have fun with this. Hem all of your clothes too short. Wash. Re-hem. Now you look like you can’t find pants long enough. This is a much more comfortable way to create the illusion of height than wearing heels.
