The Unwearables

I was feeling adventurous so I decided to try out this vintage shorts pattern with the denim I had left from my jeans. I've noticed high-waisted shorts and skirts are appearing again in fashion magazines. This is a dangerous style because it can create the illusion of a very long butt. This can be good - if you're trying to counteract the reality of having a wide butt, however it might just make you look big in every direction, and it definitely runs the risk of looking extremely uncool. When I was cutting the pattern I kept thinking of summer-camp shorts - mainly inspired by the pattern illustrations. When I tried them on I could only think postal-worker. The real problem with these shorts, as you can see, are the horizontal crotch creases that will not go away. I spent hours trying to resolve this problem. The shorts have four darts in the front. I lengthened them considerably to try to shift the extra fabric down the leg. I also adjusted the front crotch seam several times. I'm giving up. I'm guessing that front darts are just a bad idea on pants or shorts and I will avoid them in the future.

The charm of showing the challenges, the "misfits" and the problems along with the successes--like those smashing blue jeans--is what makes this blog wonderfully readable. Great to be in the sewing room with you, hearing the melodic hum of the new machine and waiting for the next fashion statement. I believe you might be filling the void in the lives of those awaiting the next project runway? Try to resist making an outfit from your bedding and curtains, although I'll bet you could, in the words of PR's Tim Gunn, "make it work."

That reminds me of the kindergarten project of making dresses out of old pillow cases. All you do is cut a head hole and arm holes and then color on the front and back with fabric crayons. We might have also cut the bottom into fringe. Do they still make fabric crayons, or was that replaced by puffy paint? Do they still make puffy paint? I might have to make a trip to Michael's.

I really think you could have had the start of a great shorts-jumper, next time extend the waist, add straps, and possibly learn to yodel.

The horizontal creases aren't because of the darts - darts are a Good Thing, and although you can't see them, jeans have lots of darts.

You should get a good fitting book that explains what causes each type of crease; the answer is not always obvious. From memory, horizontal creases in the front are either a crotch depth problem, or they're just too tight (I always look that stuff up).
